About Fat Tree Project

Our Story

Fat Tree Project intends to document the largest diameter trees in our locality, with the single purpose of creating awareness of these big boys so our kids will have a chance to enjoy and admire them too. The intent is to start small, say your own yard, then we comb through Guntersville city limits; on to Marshall County and perhaps cover all North Alabama at some point.

Our (non) Expertise

Our team are not experts but passionate about our mission. We do have expert  contacts and liase with certified arborists and tree care professionals to guide us where needed. In addition, we are making sure that the Guntersville Tree Commission , TVA and City government is aware of our efforts. All that is required is a tape measure. We are hoping that you are the expert and will help out locating the local "Fat Boys" .

How to Measure

Using a long tape measure, check the circumference of the tree at a standard height of 54 inches (breast height). Using a string to wrap around the tree base and measure it on the ground afterwards works too if easier (no split trees).

Then take a picture of the bark, one of the leaves, and the whole tree if possible and Drop a Pin locator using Apple Maps on your phone to preserve the coordinates in case you need to return to the tree later.

Email or text the measurements, pictures and location to the  info@fattreeproject   (256) 302-5975 . You can just call us if confidentiality is an issue--  we are committed to preserving the trees and their surroundings and will handle the information is a responsible manner. We are open to comments and suggestions you have to improve the project.

Help us Find a Local Champion Tree

Citizens are enncouraged to measure and submit or contact us with any large tree of any native species. If we think it is a potential, we'll help measure and compare with the Alabama Forestry Commission's Champion Tree list.
